Getting the Most of Mudding

One of the best ways to enjoy time on your UTV is by hitting the trails after a good rainstorm. There is something about tearing through puddles, mud flipping every which way, that just can’t be beat. While that alone may be enough to give you quite a thrill, there are things you can do to take your UTV experience in the mud to another level.

Preparing for the Mud

With all that mud and water flying around, you want to make sure that your UTV is protected to avoid damage.
  • Seal your airbox. You want to make sure that your airbox has a lid with no holes or openings, and that everything from the intake on your engine to the airbox is sealed.
  • Cover your air filter. You can buy an air filter or cover as well to protect your machine.
  • Get a snorkel kit. Extend the opening of your air intake box where it’s sure to always have a fresh supply with a snorkel kit. One of the worst things you can do to your UTV is get mud or water in your motor, so it’s important to keep your inlets above water. You can also opt for exhaust snorkels too.
  • Grease up your machine. It’s easy to overlook, but water can be damaging to bearings and pivot. Use appropriate grease to keep them water resistant. The same can be done with grease and silicone for all electrical connections too!
  • Invest in the right tires. Believe it or not, your UTV tires will make a huge difference when you ride, especially when it comes to mudding. You’ll want something with wide, inside-to-outside tread pattern. This helps to keep the mud moving through your tread instead of getting stuck in it. Wide, deep treads give you great traction and control on soft terrain like mud.
  • A winch is a must. If you don’t already have one, you’re going to want to invest in a proper winch before mudding. If there’s any time getting stuck is likely, it’s when you’re mudding. If you already have one, make sure it is clean and in proper working condition.
  • Add a UTV windshield. When all that mud and water, do yourself a favor by keeping some of it off of you and out of your face with a UTV windshield. At UTV Windshields and Accessories you will find quality windshields that fit tight, are strongly secured, and made form the highest quality material on the market.

In the Elements

Getting the most out of mudding doesn’t end with prep work. There are a few important things to remember while you’re out in the mud.
  • Play it safe. Remember that every mud hole is different, and it may be difficult to determine just how deep or difficult a hole might be. Pay attention to the tracks of those who have ridden ahead of you.
  • Don’t lose momentum. When a sticky situation arises, remember that it’s important to keep your momentum.
  • Above all, have fun. Getting the most out of mudding is easy to do when you’ve properly prepared. All that’s left to do is get out and enjoy some mud!
